German help for Syria

Germany announced to add another billion Euro (1.6 billion Dollar) to the aid for Syria, as well for its neighbours to help them to deal with the flood of refugees fleeing the war.

This may be increased by an additional 300 mio Euro (nearly 500 million Dollar) if the state budget gets through the parliament.

This brings the overall help for Syria to 4.5 billion Euro (7.2 billion Dollar) since the conflict began.

Just in 2016, Germany took 433.120 refugees, many of them from Syria.

In comparison, Australia, a country with roughly 25% of Germany’s population, took ca 34.000 refugees in 2016. Australia gave $213 million aid to Syria from 2011 to 2016, and plans to spend another $220 million from 2016 to 1019.

Germany welcomed refugees and is still housing them in communities, not in detention centres.

In contrast to Germany, Australia was actively involved in the wars in the Middle East since 2002 which contributed to the instability.
